At the finish:  “We broke the throttle cable at the start of the 2nd stage this morning. We have now driven 2 stages with the co-driver operating the accelerator through the window. This has proven a very interesting last few hours. An experiment not worth repeating”

SS48: Have broken throttle - co-driver holding a cord out the window - pull to go. Have to be a pretty trusting driver!

SS39: “Good forest stage - lovely”

SS39: “I had my first spin of the event & damn, it was after the finish”

SS47: “I always enjoy the challenge of Kaiwara road. I grew up here in Culverden”

SS45: “We gave the motor a hard time in there with the long straights. The oil pressure was dropping.”

SS47:  “Went backwards through a fence - the strainer hit the drivers door” he came out towing 20m of fencewire on the rear axle

SS46: “Great fun, power sliding everywhere”

SS45: “Too muddy for us. There was always a good chance of sliding off on the yellow clay”

SS42: Was last seen on jack stands at NZED workshops in Coleridge. When he came through late in stage he reported the panhard bolt on the diff had come loose & the NZED boys welded it up. “They had plenty of power to do aye”

SS41: “Very lucky, broken panhard rod - welded up at power station”

SS39: It was a gearbox & clutch problem - now I have a new gearbox in with ratios that are so high I only used 1st & 2nd gear in the whole 10km”

Before SS35: Temporary withdrawal.

SS33: “Lost 4th gear in SS32, drained oil, lots of teeth fell out, now we’re running”

SS32: “Brows very tricky. Easy to go off if not concentrating”

SS30: “Better stage, flowing. I just love those stages”

SS27 & SS27a: “I’ve enjoyed every stage of this day immensely. Now I’m not quite so cautious”

SS25:  “We have more power now. A new head. The piston slap is bloody well still there! Great to be back

SS13: “Lots of smoke, but good” Was spoken to at service on road & he thinks either blown head gasket or worse. Will work on it. He didn’t do SS15

SS12: “Lots of big rocks, rough but OK”

SS11a: “Oil temp up a bit. Stage just like being in Bolivia”

SS7:  “I don’t know what speed we got up to but we were on the shift line in top”

SS6: “This thing still does over 200kph. I’m getting used to driving it again on a less than firm ground”

SS4:  “Piston flat. A few problems, electric fan stopped at start of ss1. Engine over 200 degrees”

SS16:  “Having a good day - caught car 47, couldn’t get past.”

SS15: “Running on 4, bloody marvellous”

SS13: With a big smile driver told me the missfire has been fixed, “we passed 3 cars”

SS11a: “Continues to run on 3 or 4 cylinders, whatever it feels like”

SS8: “Dropped onto 2 cylinders at the start, then picked up & ran OK”

SS7: “Got woken up in there. If you were brave, you could make up some time”

SS6: “The motor is off song, goes good, then goes off. We’ll just keep it going” Big smile on face, so they’re happy

SS5: “Changed jets in carb at service. Missed all the time in the stage, but came right as we went over the finish line”

SS4:  “Its still going! Starting to do better, the engine is the only concern - with driving you never forget how to ride a bike”

SS1: “Original car - BDA - had engine probs on Thursday, so we rebuilt this car in 2 days. Has standard engine”
